Many grills on the market use thin sheet metal. Bourbon Trail Grillworks builds this one from 10-gauge mild steel throughout, with even thicker steel in the firebox, so it holds up for years. The horizontal drive shaft turns on oil-impregnated bronze bushings and roller bearings instead of a steel-on-steel fit, so raising and lowering the grate is smooth and quiet. The grate is strong enough that the builder can stand on it without it flexing.

Cables can fray over time, so Bourbon Trail Grillworks uses ANSI 40 roller chain instead, the same kind of chain found on dirt bikes and other heavy-duty machinery. Because the grate is so heavy, a gear-reduction system keeps the hand wheel easy to turn. A ratchet clicks and locks the grate at your chosen height as you crank. To lower it, roll the handle forward, pull the release lever, and the grate comes down gently.
